Blog Create your perfect website screenshot.

I noticed that quite so many drupalsites.net users would submit not exactly nice screenshots for the sites they want present to the crowd. For majority of visitors screenshot is the major push to click on your site link to check it out. So it's very important to have a nice one. I gathered a few tips for grabbing a perfect website screenshot (and not only for drupalsites.net of course). Here we go:

Cross platform solution (Windows, Mac, Linux, ...):

If you have Firefox, you can do it easily use add-on called Screengrab! (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1146). Site content will look exactly the same as in FireFox/Mozilla based browsers. After you install it, click on Screengrab'a icon, then save -> complete page/frame and save the result.

Mac

There is a wonderful free utility called Paparazzi! (http://derailer.org/paparazzi/) which is here to help. It renders website content with WebKit engine which is used by Safari, Shiira, Google Chrome and the rest of browser majority on OSX. Here are a few tips:

1. Set the min size and crop size (well, ok, here I try to keep drupalsites.net server sane) to 1024x1024.
2. If you have some flash or heavy javascript content you may set delay to allow everything load properly. Usually the value would be 1-3 (seconds).
3. Capture and save under some understandable name.

Windows

On Windows you may use quite so nice free utility called WebShot (http://www.websitescreenshots.com/). It makes full website screenshots via IE engine installed on your system.

WebShot has much much more options (like batch grab). I just pointed the simplest ones.

I use Skitch for Mac

Hi,
I have never seen the derailer app for Mac but I use Skitch daily. It does the job pretty well.

On a similar note, what are you using for the snapshots above (with 1, 2, 3 highlighted steps and arrows inserted into the images?) Is it for Mac or do you use a PC?

Thanks

Skitch

Skitch (http://www.skitch.com/) is a nice application indeed. But as far as I understand it will not render the whole web page for you. You can only render visible part, which is not always enough.

Re notes on snapshots: I used LittleSnapper (http://www.realmacsoftware.com/littlesnapper/) which is my tool of choice to work with misc screenshots. I didn't list it in my small review just because it's not a free app.

Skitch provides a much easier alternative: It's a software program that allows you to drag a box around exactly what you want to capture. Your screen captures are a matter of selecting what you want to save with your mouse, rather than trying to type lengthy keyboard shortcuts.

Great to know Skitch and Paparazzi. I read your article and it was really interesting. These days I have been often visiting your site and its really nice. Keep up the good work.

Spot on!

Exactly what I was looking for. There are many image resizing apps out there but very few do actually deliver. I have tried image vector but the output for small images seem distorted.

Good to see the above steps

Good to see the above steps listed in. It is stated in such a simple manner that a person like me who is new to all this is also finding it quiet easy. Will look forward to much more things like these.

Thanks for the links!

Thanks you for good pieces of information. Sometimes you really need to have good shots (fro presentation, advertisement), but feel useless when trying to make them.

I use Snagit for Windows.. Its an awesome tool, the only problem is that it is a bit expensive. The price is $ 50 but i think its worth paying 50 bucks for this tool. David from Android Development.

Great info!

I quite like FireShot for FF which is free and works quite well for most things. I also quite like Skitch! :)
The great thing I like about Fireshot is that it is quick to access and export the image to a variety of applications for different uses.

Thanks

Thank you for the hint. If i was making a screenshot of a website i usually had to make a screenshot of the whole desktop and had to crop it. But now it seems i can do great screenshots only from the website. It´s a great plus for me that this is possible with a Mac and even with Linux. This is great. I will try this addon instantly.
